CUW CS Tech Camp
The Computer Science department is pleased to announce its second annual summer Tech Camp!*
The camp will run July 10-14 from 8 am to Noon each day.
As a service to the CUW community, the camp is FREE for those relatives of CUW staff, faculty, and supporters who will be entering grades 3 – 12 in the Fall.
There will be three concurrent sessions for different grade levels:
Grades 3 – 5: Little Bits Tech
Lead instructor: Prof. Antoinette (Toni) Spencer
Unleash your creativity using “Little Bits,” electronic building blocks designed specifically for next generation tech innovators. Are you curious about how the gadgets you use every day work? Do you want to know how computers function? Here’s your chance to find out how technology works and investigate the many ways we can use electronics! As a Little Bits Camper, you’ll be an inventor of both toys and useful tools as you start your problem-solving journey.
More information on the materials we’ll use in this session can be found at http://littlebits.cc/
Grades 6 – 8: Robotics
Lead instructor: Prof. Josh Locklair
Experience the world of robotics using Ozobots and Lego Mindstorms. Can you program a robot to perform the task you choose? Find out by using the next generation of consumer robots to explore the fundamentals of hardware and software design. Put your new skills to the test by designing, building, programming, and testing robots for games and useful tasks. Take your critical thinking skills to the next level as you investigate one of the fastest growing fields in technology.
Grades 9 – 12 “iOS Apps”
Lead instructor: Dr. Mike Litman
Explore iPhone (iOS) and Android app development from the ground up. How exactly do they create those apps? What goes on behind the scenes to make the magic happen? Build your problem-solving toolkit and develop skills that last a lifetime while enjoying this fast-paced and innovative camp. You’ll learn about the tools, techniques, and awesomeness that go into making your own app and have more than a little fun along the way. No prior programming or app building experience required. No iOS device? No problem! The knowledge gained in this camp directly translates to Android development, too. Need more awesomeness? The development tools we’ll use in this camp are freely available so you can continue learning all summer long.
We would love to see your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and relatives learn with us as we put inspiration in action.
* Chuck Norris approved camp 😉
While each grade level will have a specific focus, every camper will also have the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality, 3D design and printing, and robotics programming.
