The Apple IIe was one of Apple's most sucessful designs. Various models remained in production for a period of 10 years (from 1983 to 1993) - longer than any other computer made by Apple. While it was marketed primarily as a machine for businesses, many found their way into homes and schools.
The IIe initially shipped with the DOS 3.3 operating system. Later models (produced after 1984) came with ProDOS.
The first update to the basic IIe design, the IIe Enhanced, was introduced in 1985. It featured 128 KB of RAM, 32 KB of ROM, and a more powerful processor (the 65C02).
In 1987, the Apple IIe Platinum was released. Almost all of the changes in this model were cosmetic. The case was changed from beige to a platinum color (hence the name). A numeric keypad was added and the main keyboard was changed to be identical to the Apple IIgs. The internal components were functionally the same as the IIe Enhanced.
