The Commodore 64 was the most popular home computer ever produced. It is estimated that 17 to 22 million of these machines were sold between 1982 and 1993. By way of comparison, that's more than all Macintosh models combined, and dwarfs the figures for both the IBM PC and AT. In 1984, 300,000 Commodore 64s were being sold each month.
The Commodore 64 contained the first sound chip made specifically for a home computer - the Sound Interface Device (SID). Because of its sound and graphics capabilities, the 64 was a popular game platform.
