The 80486 included several significant improvements over Intel's earlier CPUs. It was the first Intel processor with cache memory built into the chip itself (it included 8 KB of level 1 cache). It also featured a float point unit (or math coprocessor) which integrated, rather than a seperate chip. The initial 486 was available in speeds ranging from 20 Mhz (rated for 20 million instructions per second, or MIPS) to 66 Mhz (54 MIPS).
Eventually, three different models of the 486 were made: the original 486 (called the 486DX), the 486 DX4 (which ran at 75 or 100 Mhz), and the 486 SX (a lower-cost version with a disabled floating point unit.)
